Teen driver dies after crash on I-17

February 6, 2024

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a Sunday afternoon crash on I-17 that took the life of a 16-year-old boy.

According to DPS, a southbound car drifted onto the right shoulder near Bloody Basin Road, south of Cordes Junction, and the driver then steered back to the left, then lost control. The vehicle spun, and the passenger side hit the end attenuator of a guardrail, resulting in the guardrail going through the car and severely injuring both occupants.

The teenage driver was pronounced deceased at the scene, and his passenger was flown to a Phoenix hospital for treatment.
