Law enforcement promoting online safety for Safer Internet Day

February 6, 2024

Today is Safer Internet Day, and local law enforcement encourages parents to make sure your children are using technology responsibly and respectfully.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force uses the acronym SMART to advise parents to know how your children’s devices and online accounts are “Set up,” and be familiar with current online trends and dangers. “Monitor” their online use and connections. Make sure you “Approve” any app or game your child uses; “Restrict” content, permissions and screen time; and “Talk” with your child often about responsibility and expectations, online safety, what is and is not appropriate for their age, and why you have the rules you set. Be open to learning from them as well.
