Local law enforcement reminds the public to beware of phone scams that continue to make the rounds in our communities.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports over the past week of calls claiming to be from Sergeant Scott Joy and Chief Jeff Newnum requesting payment for an outstanding warrant; and instructing victims to call 928-224-2429.

YCSO says those are the names of real Sheriff’s Office employees, but officials will never ask for payment over the phone for any warrant or citation issue.

Prescott Valley Police also remind the public that the IRS will never demand payment over the phone, and if there is a legitimate issue with your taxes, they will contact you by mail first.

Any request for payment via wire transfer, pre-paid debit or gift cards, or via cryptocurrency should be a red flag; as should any request for personal information, such as Social Security numbers, birthdates or account passwords.

If you are concerned that an issue may be legitimate, hang up the phone and look up the agency’s contact information yourself to verify with them.
