Sedona FD urges extra caution after recent hiker falls/fatalities

February 12, 2024
The Sedona Fire District is reminding hikers to be extra cautious on the trails, after two recent fatalities.
The District says both incidents were related to falls; and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office says the first occurred on February 3rd. A group of tourists from the Phoenix area had rented ATV’s and stopped at Merry-go-round Rock to take pictures. One of the group, 33-year-old Michael Jung of Scottsdale, climbed to a height of between 75 and 100 feet, and subsequently fell.
The second incident was more recent, and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office will release more details.
Fire officials say trails are slippery due to recent rain, snow and freezing overnight temperatures; so they recommend you avoid steep slopes and cliff edges, and pay particular attention to shaded areas.
Stay informed on local weather forecasts, and heed warnings about adverse conditions or trail closures. Prepare appropriately, with proper footwear that has good grip, layered clothing, and a fully-charged cell phoneKnow which trail you are on, and take a companion with you. If you must hike alone, always let someone know your planned route and expected return time.
