The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Flagstaff Police are seeing another round of reports about phone scammers posing as law enforcement.

The suspects “spoof” their phone number to make it appear as CCSO on Caller ID, and use an official title and/or name, likely taken from the Sheriff’s Office website, or social media. They say the victim has a warrant or owes a fine for failure to appear for jury duty, or some other civil matter.

Remember that law enforcement will never ask for money over the phone; and you should be suspicious of any unsolicited request for payment via money transfer app, gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Be cautious of mimicked phone numbers or email addresses; trust your instincts if a caller makes you uncomfortable; and even if a call or email seems legitimate, hang up and look up the agency’s phone number yourself to find out if there is actually an issue.
