The Coconino National Forest reminds visitors that scratching or carving your name into rocks or trees is illegal; as Forest Service law enforcement is investigating a recent case in the Sedona area.

Officials say that in addition to detracting from the natural beauty, scratching or carving also kills the microscopic bacteria that make up the patina, or “desert varnish” essential to the area’s ecology.

The idea that markings will be washed away by the rain is a misconception; removal typically requires scrubbing, which can cause further damage.

The Forest reminds visitors to always practice Leave No Trace principles on any public lands.
