The Arizona Department of Health Services is observing Eating Disorders Awareness Week, with a message of hope, support and visibility to those affected.

According to DHS, nearly 1 in 10 Arizonans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime; and according to a youth survey, 1 in 2 Arizona teens who were trying to lose weight reported engaging in unhealthy behaviors, like fasting and purging.

Officials say prevention, early screening and treatment are key to addressing eating disorders; and full recovery is possible.

They encourage parents, caregivers and anyone who works with youth to support positive relationships with food, exercise and body image; and to be a good example of health and balance.
