Summit FMD puts out 3 wildfires on Sunday; officials urge preparation

March 5, 2024
Summit Fire and Medical crews responded to three separate wildfires north of Flagstaff on Sunday.
Officials say the first was reported around 11:30 a.m., along Highway 89; and crews contained it to about a quarter-acre. A couple of hours later, they put out a blaze near Merriam Crater, off of Leupp Road, at about half an acre. Then later Sunday night, they were called to another fire at the Cinder Lake area. That blaze was contained at between half- and one acre; and Summit did not release any initial information about how any of the fires started.
The Department says that although there is still snow on the ground in some places, grass and lighter fuels are already starting to dry out. Fire officials remind the public that wildfires are never out of season, and there is no better time than now to prepare.
Summit and Flagstaff Fire are offering Firewise Assessments and Fuels Reduction Treatments for local residents. An assessment will provide you with steps to make your home more resistant to wildfire; and grant funding may be available to help with the cost of reducing fuels around your property.
