The National Park Service has begun the public review process for a proposal to remove and replace the Grand Canyon Railway wooden ballast bridge at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Officials say the bridge, which was built over the Bright Angel Wash in the 1920’s, is still used daily by trains; but is in poor condition, and poses a safety hazard.

Because it is part of two official Historic Districts, the Park Service and State Historic Preservation Office have drafted a programmatic agreement ensuring the replacement bridge will meet federal standards while also being compatible with the historic districts.
