The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a Dewey woman for allegedly shooting her husband last fall, after the couple initially blamed the shooting on a stranger.

YCSO says that in September 2023, deputies were called to a Prescott Valley hospital, where a man was being treated for a shoulder wound. The victim’s wife had told a 911 operator that her husband had been shot while walking on Henderson Road; so deputies canvassed homes in the area, but no one knew anything about any shooting or suspect.

During follow-up investigations, the victim reportedly changed his story, and said he had been shot by a stranger while he was at a neighbor’s house. After months of investigation, deputies learned that there had been numerous domestic violence calls involving the victim and his wife, and that the couple had since separated.

Based on that information, and the lack of any evidence of a shooting at either of the places where the victim said it happened, investigators interviewed the man again. This time, he said his wife had shot him during an argument at their home; and deputies recovered what they believed to be the gun that was used.

They then interviewed the wife, who eventually admitted to shooting the victim during an argument over her cell phone. She also corroborated other evidence YCSO had obtained, and was arrested for Aggravated Assault, and will also be charged with evidence tampering.
