With income tax season underway, the Arizona Department of Revenue says that if you are hiring someone to help prepare your taxes, make sure their training and experience are right for you, before making any financial commitment.

Officials say that while most tax preparers are honest, there are cases of those who submit fraudulent returns, or get clients a larger refund through unlawful means; but regardless of who prepares your tax return, you are ultimately responsible for all the information it contains.

The DOR recommends that when choosing a tax preparer, you ask about their experience and formal training, including how current it is; and check for reviews from the State Board of Accountancy or Bar Association.

Make sure the preparer is available year-round in case you have questions or issues after tax season ends. Check that all the information on your return is correct, and that the preparer signs it with their tax identification number before you sign and submit it. Get a copy of the entire return, including schedules, deductions and credits; and make sure your refund will be deposited directly into your bank account.

Avoid preparers who base their fees on a percentage of your refund, and be cautious of anyone that boasts about delivering bigger refunds. If your refund seems too good to be true, it probably is.

About 70% of taxpayers are eligible for free electronic filing, through the Free File Alliance; with benefits including more secure and faster processing, and fewer errors and miscalculations. For more information visit azdor.gov.
